“All posts, check in,” I whisper into my team’s comm.

“Post one, all clear.”

“Post two, all clear.”

“Post three, all clear.”

Their voices come through my earpiece one by one, all of them reporting the same thing. Nothing. It’s just after three in the morning, and I stifle a yawn. Montgomery stuck me with six of his men, and I’m starting to think that it’s all for naught. Maybe we got it wrong and the crew never intended to hit the show. Or maybe it’s not the right day. But we’ve been here getting set up and securing our positions since noon, and we haven’t had a sniff of anything amiss.

“What do you think?” Astra whispers. “We tilting at windmills out here?”

“I’m starting to think so, yeah.”

I’ve divided us up into teams of two. My team is in our normal duos, and I paired Montgomery’s men together. I figure if we’re working with somebody we know and trust, we won’t have to worry about somebody who’s a stranger to us watching our back. The truth is, I’m glad to have the extra help on this op. Having six more bodies is a good thing… so long as these guys can perform under pressure, that is.

“It’s almost three,” says Peters, one of Montgomery’s guys. “Are we going to call it anytime soon or wait ‘til the sun comes up?”

The annoyance in his voice is impossible to miss, and it makes me grit my teeth. I glance at Astra, and she’s looking at me with an expression of surprise on her face.

“Did he just—”

I nod. “Yeah. I think so.”

“Oh, you’re not going to let him get away with that, are you?”

“I don’t want any more friction between us and Montgomery’s men.”

“Yeah, but you don’t want those clowns thinking they can disrespect you either,” Astra protests. “Montgomery may outrank you, but you sure as hell outrank them.”

“Hello? Is anybody out there listening?” Peters’s voice comes through my earpiece again, even tighter and more annoyed.

Before I can stop myself, I key the comms. “Do you have somewhere better you need to be, Peters?”

“My bed. Asleep,” he replies with a chuckle.

“That’s enough,” I growl, my voice low and authoritative. “You have been put under my command for this op, and we are going to stay here until I say we’re done. Am I clear?”

“Yes ma’am,” Peters says. “Sorry, ma’am.”

“Keep your eyes and ears open, and be ready, people,” I snap. “And no more idle chatter on the line. We don’t know who’s listening.”

He keys the comm rather than speaking to reply, and Astra smiles at me. “I think that’s him giving you the silent treatment.”

“Whatever,” I reply and roll my eyes.

As we wait in darkness, I go over my plan and how I’ve got my team deployed in my head for the millionth time. With nothing else going on, all I have to do is obsess. I’ve got Mo and Lucas in the empty, unfinished office in the high-rise across the street providing overwatch
